An Abrupt Ending

At first I was quietly working on getting ready to start a new round in Sundry Station, starting with my lovely Sarah Green and the ROW Challenge. Unfortunately, late on the night of Halloween, someone caused a sprinkler head to break off, causing at least 5000 gallons of water to flood my dorm. Luckily, my room was not affected. However, I didn't move back into my dorm until yesterday. While setting up my things, my computer, which was previously reliable, wouldn't start. Also, my warranty had run out, and HP decided to give a web address to get a number. Not very helpful if you can't even start your computer.
So after trying everything I could think of, I finally had to resort to System Recovery, not knowing that it would completely erase my hard drive. So I'm starting over with a fresh slate. No annoying problem of unlinking instead of deleting my CC files, but on the other side of the coin... no files. All my work is absolutely obliterated. I'm working on restoring my music files at the moment. I've re-installed the base game, but I'm not sure what I'm going to do from there. This was all to let you know that Wellington Women, As Long As We Both Shall Live, Sundry Station Asylum, and Prosperity Park have come to an abrupt halt and I've lost about 6 months of hard work. So that's it, in a way. Rosemary and Roger, James and Annette, Jane and Daniel, and Sarah and her siblings have all been taken from me. It's really depressing, especially since this was my first challenge I started that I had every intention of completing.

Edit: I was messing around in CAS last month and I somehow managed to recreate both Roger and Rosemary! Is it sad that I shed tears of joy to see them again in CAS? I guess it's a good thing they used standard Maxis faces. They will definitely be returning at a later date. (written 2/28/08)

An update for the week! Happy happy joy joy!
I'm as glad as you are that the week is done. I'm ready to move on.
But as I'm sure you know, managing a house of 8 sims isn't a walk in the park. Yep, I'm back to the original house.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled mayhem.

Roger certainly hasn't been the same since he hit his head at Jane's house. He's a lot louder. He sleeps more, but he has the strangest whims. He asked to paint my portrait today.

But he did really well. It's fantastic! It's now hanging on the wall, along with a portrait of him I painted in return.

I just wish he'd closed his mouth. Oh well. I feel like I'm really leaving something behind to remember us by.

RoW House 2: Irreconcilable Differences

We're back to finish up a crazy week back in House 2. Then we go to Bella, and finally, we check in on Brittany Noelle. If I finish my report, it just might be soon!

Now where were we? Oh yes. Jane is angry at Daniel, who's zooming up the crime ladder, Samuel and Brad get along, and Sarah's growing like a weed. That about covers it.
Now on with the story!

Well, folks that was my crazy week in House 2. It hurt my heart to do that. I had to hit pause and exit to recover, then restart the game. I don't know how Ruby, Alexis, and Beans did it so often. Next post, it's back to the main house. We got teens and rapidly fading Roger and Rosemary. And I never got portraits!

Hello, I'm finally back. And I'm writing this between a report about some old dead guy I've never heard of, and reading a boring chapter of a boring textbook. So you can guess why it's been so long since you've gotten an update. College would be so much funner without classes. Pointless, but funner. Hehe.

He grew up quietly, in his room. I almost missed it.

Well, I'd cooked some pork chops. While they were in the oven, I was cleaning the counter next to it. Either I started daydreaming or there's something wrong with that stove, because it caught fire. I called the fire department, but it was a rather close call, too close for comfort.

Okay. Jane is now officially the second generation. She will live under a slightly different set of rules than you, Rosemary.
Only slightly?
Well, I guess it depends on how you view "slightly."
Explaining the new rules to me might help me decide if it's really "slightly."
Well, they're not really new in the sense you're thinking. She has the choice of one more aspiration, she can get a job, she can run a business, she can go downtown or to the shopping district if asked by a male, she can hire household help, she can throw parties, she can divorce her husband or have an affair with another man, yeah, that isn't slightly, is it?
.....No.
Well, other than that, rules are the same, meaning that as much as I like her hair, it's unacceptable.

Jane: Hey! Miss Person! Will this work?
Yes, that's just fine, Jane. Call me Infinity.
Jane: Infinini-wha?
Just call me Fini.
No daughter of mine was going to wear a jumper as short as the one she had on. I went out and got that myself.
Yeah, about that...

Care to explain this? That isn't Rosemary by any stretch of the imagination.
Oh, well that's innocent chit-chat. Besides, I'd seen her hanging around outside our house before. I wanted to see who she was.
I don't buy it, but for Rosemary's sake, I'll trust you. But know this. I'm keeping an eye on you, Buster.
Got it.
And just when you and she had started to reconnect...

So we leave the Wellingtons, Roger and Rosemary, with two young children, Roger with a recent promotion to Sous Chef, and Rosemary back to a full night of sleep.

Maybe, just maybe, Roger's smart enough to try to avoid divine retribution, but you never know with men. Next time, you'll be able to meet Jane's future husband. Till then!

Working Toward Generation 2

If you see something similar to a much more experienced blogger, they inspired me, but since I'm not copying and pasting their story into my blog, I don't see much of a problem. Now, on to my very patient couple waiting for introductions. This is Roger Wellington, and his lovely wife, Rosemary.

They recently came into a rather large inheritance from Roger's great-uncle. With that, the couple bought a pretty country cottage to raise their family. Yeah, kids were a given.

Roger: Yeah, I'd love to see some little Rogers running around the place. That'd be the best, right, Rosemary?
Rosemary smiles sweetly and nods her head slowly so her deceptively sturdy looking hairstyle wouldn't fall out again, though she thought, "I wouldn't mind a girl myself."

Okay, time to go inside. Roger, pick up the paper. You need to find a job.
Roger: No problem.
Rosemary: What about me?
Well, you need to get a cooking skill point or two, so you can cook filling, nutritious meals for your family.
Rosemary: Well, actually, I was referring to a job.
Oh, you don't work.
Rosemary: But I am worried about the amount of money coming in. I should get a job so we can be a bit more financially secure before starting a family.
I totally understand your concerns. But it is improper for a woman to work outside the home. So you will be staying home.
Rosemary: Wait, did time reverse itself by about seventy-five years? Are you saying I can't work?
I am saying you cannot hold a traditional job. However, you can have a garden, and make money by selling the food you grow.
Roger: This is best. She is right you know. Besides, you won't have any time to work between the kids and the housework.
Rosemary: I should have about the same amount of time as you if we're sharing the responsibilities.
Roger: But we are, honey. I'm going to work five days a week, and you're talking care of our home.
Oh yeah, I forgot to mention, you do all the housework too.
Rosemary is quiet, glaring daggers at her husband, since she can't see me.
Don't worry Rosemary, you'll get used to it.

Well, it's not like she had much of a choice. Roger got a job as an ambassador's intern. He needed to leave around 8 and he woke up at 6. Since Rosemary wasn't going anywhere, naturally she would be making the meals. When he left, she cleaned everything and cooked some more. While he was gone, she studied cooking and cleaning. He got back feeling in the mood to give his wife some special attention. While she wasn't so inclined, it was obvious that her desires weren't coming into the heads of either her husband or the dreadful woman who started talking to them when they arrived. So she just set her teeth and got it over with.

Congratulations Rosemary, you're going to have a baby!
Rosemary: That's wonderful. But how do you know?
Trust me.
Roger is fast asleep, so he'll get the news later.

The rest of that night was uneventful. But the next day kicked into high gear early on.

There was no doubt now that another Wellington was on the way. Rosemary started cooking a lot, so she wouldn't have to take the time to cook later on when her hormones went for a loop later that day.

The pregnancy was normal: three days of bloating, hunger, fatigue, hell. But as far as both parents are concerned, it was worth it for the beautiful baby boy.

Meet James Wellington.

Cutie, isn't he?
Roger: Forget cute. He's going to be the toast of the town when he grows up. He's gonna make some woman very happy.
Rosemary: *smiles* He's just perfect.

James was a good baby, even though he had a penchant for waking his mother up too early. It was fine though: Rosemary was only too happy to take care of him.

Although there were times that Rosemary wasn't too happy, for example, when James threw up on her.

But no matter, because now James has grown up to a toddler! I know you're happy, aren't you Rosemary?
Rosemary: I am. Now we can teach him how to walk, talk, and use a toilet!
Uh, actually, you'll be doing all of that.
Rosemary: *forced smile* I can't believe this.
Roger: Whew! That's my Rosemary. A born mother.
Better you than me. Let get a look at James.

Once James grew up, Roger missed seeing someone in the crib across the hall. So he and Rosemary had another roll in the hay.

Roger got up and went to his new job as a drive-through clerk, while Rosemary got up and got the sign she was waiting for. A trip to the bathroom. Another baby was on the way. Until then, James needed attending to.

Rosemary: Is something wrong with James? He doesn't seem to learn how to use the toilet quickly.
Oh, that's gonna take a while. At least James loves you.
Rosemary: Just my luck.

And we leave the house with Rosemary pregnant with her second child, Roger promoted to Host, and James with four charisma points, but no skills learned. Oh well. We'll work on that next time.

Rights of Women Rules

A commenter on my most recent post made me realize that I never put up the rules for the Rights of Women Challenge and this may be the only RoW challenge some people read. So for Melissa's pleasure, here are the most recently updated rules.

The Rights Of Women Challenge - The Long-Awaited Updated Version
The Premise
To start with a single male/female couple and progress through the historical trends of womens' rights, using the female offspring of each generation to push the family forward until we arrive at modern woman.
The Outline
- Make a male and female couple in CAS; they can be set as married or wed later.
- Once they are married, begin to Try For a Baby until they have at least one female child (code name - Child A).
- Treat the original couple using the rules of Generation One (see below).
- Raise Child A, using the rules for Generation Two (see below).
- When she is an adult, she will marry and have at least one female child (Child B).
- Raise Child B using the rules of Generation Three (see below).
- When she is an adult, have her marry and have at least one female child (Child C).
- Raise Child C using the rules of Generation Four (see below).
- When she is an adult, have her marry and have at least one female child (Child D).
- Raise Child D with the rules for Generation Five (see below).
---------------Generation Five is the end of the challenge.
(Fini edit: I'm guessing since she said raise Gen 5, the challenge ends at the death of Gen 5, or maybe Gen 4; I think I'll end it at Gen 4's death, since Gen 5 will live like any other Sim I play)
- Note: each female continues living her life using the rules of the generation she was born into. For example, Child B is the generation three sim; when she has Child C, she must continue living using the rules of generation three until her death, even though Child C is now generation four and living by those rules.
Generic Rules
There is a (very!) short list of rules that apply to each generation; the rules are mostly different to show the evolution of the rights.
- no cheats;
- no re-trying for babies to get chosen genders.
Generation-Specific Rules
Each generation also has specific rules that suit the time period it is meant for; assume that a) once you can do something, all following generations can and b) if I don't say you can't, you can do it.
Previous players have made various suggestions over the course of a couple years; while I haven't integrated them into the challenge (I don't want to dictate your game), I did write the best ones down so you can take note of them if you wish. Generation One
- must be of Family aspiration;
- wear a traditional-looking dress (CC is allowed);
- must keep hair up
- must remain unemployed (including in businesses), but is allowed to add money through a) breeding pets or b) tending to a garden;
- cannot own or run a community lot or business;
- cannot venture into any neighborhood other than the one where she lives (not DownTown or Shopping);
- cannot have an affair of any sort;
- cannot have child out of marriage;
- cannot get divorce (can only Move Out to break up).
Player Suggestions
- only ever use Try For a Baby (no WooHoo option mimics no contraception);
- must do all the housework and child-rearing;
- can only have female friends.

Generation Two
- must wear traditional clothing and keep hair up;
- can be Family or Popularity aspiration;
- may work in Criminal, Culinary, Education or Slacker track;
- can run business/community lot, but not own it (husband/other male must);
- may not attend University;
- must marry a male and take his name (if NPC/Townie, ask to move in and he proposes marriage);
- must move into his house (or, if he is an NPC/Townie, must both move out);
- can have heterosexual affair;
- male must have better job than her (use own judgment as to what is 'better');
- must quit working when she has her first child;
- can go to DownTown or Shopping Neighborhood, if asked by a male.
- may have a male-instigated divorce.
Player Suggestions
- can hire help around the home (Maid, Nanny, Gardener, etc);
- can host social parties.

Generation Three
- can begin wearing plain trousers and knee-length skirts, but not jeans, decorated trousers, short skirts or untraditional tops;
- must still keep hair up;
- can be Family, Popularity or Wealth;
- may get job in Athletic, Criminal, Culinary, Education, Journalism, Music, Politics or Slacker tracks;
- can own a business/community lot;
- must marry male and take his name (if NPC/Townie, ask to move in and he proposes marriage);
- must move into his house (or, if he is an NPC/Townie, must both move out);
- male must have a better job than her (again, use judgment as to what is 'better');
- may keep her job when she is married, but cannot get promotions (if qualified for one already, cannot try to qualify herself for any more promotions);
- can go to DownTown or Shopping Neighborhood with a male accompaniment (she can ask him);
- can instigate divorce, but he has to have house.
(Fini edit: She never said Gen 3 couldn't go to University, so I'm sending mine, but if she just happens to meet her perfect match: 2 or 3 bolt match, I'm having her drop out; women were in college around that time only to get married anyway)
Player Suggestions
- can have friends in either gender;
- cannot get a pension (i.e., cannot retire from job, only quit).

Generation Four
- can wear jeans, mid-thigh length skirts, but not decorated trousers or tops that show the stomach;
- can have hair down, but not elaborate;
- can be Family, Popularity, Wealth, Pleasure or Romance aspiration;
- may go to University and do Art, Drama, History or Literature majors;
- cannot drop out of her own choice, but must drop out if she gets put on academic probation;
- may get job in Adventurer, Artist, Athletic, Criminal, Culinary, Education, Journalism, Law, Military, Music, Paranormal, Politics, Science, Show Business or Slacker tracks;
- must marry/live with a male, but does not have to take his name;
- may have child out of marriage, but must be in stable relationship;
- can have homosexual affair;
- may continue living at her (parents') home after marriage, but must move out before she has children;
- both spouses can have equal jobs, but she cannot be 'better';
- can go to DownTown and Shopping Neighborhood accompanied by another sim (can be female now);
- can divorce male and kick him out of the house.
Player Suggestions
- can use WooHoo and Try For a Baby separately now;
- can retire and get a pension.

Generation Five
- may wear any clothing styles she wishes;
- may have her hair styled in way she wishes;
- can become any aspiration;
- must attend University (if you have the University EP - if not, ignore);
- can drop out at will;
- can use her second chance if she is put on academic probation;
- she can now go into any of the career tracks;
- may have better job than a male partner she may have;
- doesn't have to be in relationship leading to join with anyone (can be single throughout life);
- can be in a heterosexual or homosexual relationship;
- can adopt a child;
- may be single with a child (no need for relationship).
Player Suggestions
- is now completely free.

Points
I used a simple points system in order to prevent getting players caught up in pedantic note-keeping throughout the challenge:
- allocate 500 points per generation (maximum number of points = 2500);
- deduct 10 points each time a generic rule is broken and 20 each time a generation-specific rule is broken;
- add up points at the end.
The closer you are to 2500, the better you did the challenge according to history.
